Due to my new weak, frail, wussy condition, we took it a bit easy on our trip this year. And I think it made it much more enjoyable for the both of us! Last year we went nuts seeing every sight along the north shore, driving all the way to Grand Marais, and then conquering the end of the Gunflint trail. This year we committed to spending less time in the car and had a much more relaxing visit.
Here was our trip in a nutshell...
Friday, drove up to Cloquet area, traffic on 35 sucked, stayed over in a hotel near the casino, walked in for 15 mins and walked out $20 richer. Success. Sleepy time.
Saturday: slept in, relaxed and got on our way late morning. Drove up to Gooseberry and walked around for a half hour. Stopped at Betty's Pies for a piece of butterscotch banana and a roast beef pasty. Back to Duluth, walked around Canal park, headed back to our hotel, enjoyed a delicious steak dinner at Outback, walked across the parking lot to our hotel and lazed around.
Sunday: slept in (again), enjoyed breakfast and another doze before checking out. Dressed warm with sweatshirts and jackets for a misty cold ride on the Vista Fleet. Enjoyed the rainy spray of the north shore, and the fun sights of enormous ships going in and out of the ports and filling/unloading their cargo. Afterward, grabbed a warm bite to eat, (Old Chicago in Canal Park, always brings warm fuzzies) and took the traumatizing late afternoon drive back south. One minor set back, we got through a 10 mile stretch of stop and barely go traffic (which took a good 30-40 mins), attempted our own little detour, and somehow ended up almost back to the beginning, 5 miles before the stop/go even started. Demoralizing.
But we made it home, and had a wonderful, relaxing weekend.
